Trailblazer and McDonogh Network alumni commemorated Reunion 2026 with celebrations throughout the historic weekend.
The following Reunion 2026 recap was provided by Bessie N. A. Mbadugha ’96 P’29.
On Friday June 5, alumni gathered to honor the late Melvin Edwards, world renowned artist and Lafayette professor. Professor Curlee Raven Holton shared a heartwarming tribute, highlighting Edwards’ artistry and their cherished friendship. Professor Holton also recounted Lafayette College’s rich history as a destination for prominent Black artists. Expressing her condolences, President Nicole Farmer Hurd remarked on the importance and impact of Edwards’ “Transcendence” sculpture as a visual reminder to all. Flowers from The Gift Box were laid, with the following message: “Thank you, Melvin Edwards, for sharing the gifts of your artistic vision, phenomenal craft, and guiding mentoring. We transcend together. With gratitude, The Trailblazers and The McDonogh Network.”
On Saturday June 6, Robert Young ’14, captivated a packed audience in the Portlock Black Cultural Center with his incredible telling of the McDonogh brothers’ story. Meticulously researched with primary sources held in the Skillman Library Archives, and through collaborative conversations, Young’s presentation was impeccable. “Tales of Our Brothers: The Journey of David and Washington McDonogh,” curated and spearheaded by Young, in conjunction with former college archivist, Diane W. Shaw, is located on the first floor of Pardee Hall and is highly recommended. Thank you to Robert Young for all of his work in documenting, commemorating and celebrating Black student legacy at Lafayette.
On Saturday morning, the Trailblazers and McDonogh Network alumni proudly celebrated Bessie N. A. Mbadugha ’96 P’29, recipient of the George T. Woodring 1919 Alumni Volunteer of the Year Award, with a standing ovation at the Celebration of Leopard Leaders event in Colton Chapel. Mbadugha was commended for her many contributions to the Lafayette alumni community, from serving as the Mid and Inter Mountain West Advisory Council Chair, to hosting events such as Lafayette-Lehigh telecast parties and Wine and Dine 3/9.
On Saturday evening, during the unexpected downpour, Charles “Chuckie” Lambert ’73, treated Trailblazer and McDonogh Network alumni to a much enjoyed, impromptu lounge concert. A versatile blues artist, Chuck Lambert has played with a who’s who list of musicians, starting in his college days at Lafayette. Listening to Lambert’s stories and songs (and at times singing along!) was a wonderful and much appreciated treat!
On Sunday, Henry Horne ’75, wrapped up a wonderful weekend by winning a round of bingo at Bingo Brunch!
The Trailblazers and McDonogh Network look forward to future celebratory gatherings, including the Lafayette-Lehigh Bicentennial Homecoming weekend, featuring Darius Rucker and the 162nd meeting of The Rivalry!
