Panel Discussion: Kerns, The Quintessential Liberal Arts Educator

Lafayette faculty, arts professionals, and former students, now artists/educators, will gather to highlight the immense impact of Ed Kerns. Speakers will discuss Kern’s activities, approaches, and successes as an intellectual who broke down siloed disciplines and fostered collaborations between a broad range of academic disciplines to create community-oriented projects and pursuits. References will include his early professional career, unique projects through Lafayette (Frankenstein 2029, Katrina Relief Community-driven work in New Orleans, development of the Karl Stirner Arts Trail), and studio practice and collaboration with students. Samples of Kerns’ collaborations will be on display in Buck Hall lobby and the Williams Visual Arts Building lobby. Be sure to register for the event(s) you plan to attend!

Karl Stirner Arts Trail Tour

Tour to be led by KSAT Executive Director Jim Toia.

Ed Kerns was the Karl Stirner Arts Trail’s first chairman of its Board of Directors and the author of the KSAT’s mission and vision. Please join Jim Toia, KSAT executive director, for a tour of the Karl Stirner Arts Trail. Toia worked hand in hand with Kerns since the inception of the trail. Toia will bring the group through the trail, highlighting the work on view and the many facets of the KSAT’s development and Kerns’ influence on its mission and success. A map will be available for a self-guided tour of Ed Kerns’ work on campus for those who wish to visit the various buildings where Kerns’ work is on view.
